Kindergarten Has Dreams: A Celebration of Martin Luther King, Jr.

Well, it was a busy Tuesday after 4 days off!!  I just loved the unexpected snow day!  I also loved that more than 1/2 of my students did the snow dance when they got home: flush an ice cube down the toilet, turn in circles chanting " Please let it snow", and wear you pj's to bed inside out!!  I stole that from a former teacher at my school- but it's super cute!
Today we had a great lesson and celebration about Martin Luther King, Jr.  We started with the book, Life Lessons of Martin Luther King, Jr, very age appropriate about King's childhood life.  Next, we sang to Jack Hartman's: Celebrate Martin Luther King.  The kids really loved it and it helped them understand the concepts of peace, love, and helping others.  We finished with a Learn 360 video over King.  We did a super cute project that I found on Pinterest (I'm so addicted to Pinterest)!!  If your interested in the unit I have a link to it on my Pinterest board under Teacher Favorites!  This little mini unit was a FREEBIE...which made it even better :)!!

I started by folding yellow construction paper folded like a book.  Then, painted each child's hand- one brown hand and one white hand.  That way it looks like they are coming together then the book is closed.

One the inside they drew a picture of how to make the world more peaceful.  The funny part is that many of them put that picking up trash would make the world more peaceful-  that cracked me up!!  SO SWEET AND INNOCENT!!

This is our hall display!!  The kids actually made two pictures- one for their  books and one for the hall.

This is the poem we glued on the back of our little
                       books.

Here's our web chart we did at the end of the lesson.  They came up with some great words to describe Martin Luther King, Jr.
